The Success Secrets of a Thriving Local Business - Mr. Shower Door of Florida

Mr. Shower Door Florida

The relationship between a business and the community it serves can often be complex.  But, when a business finds the right balance between providing a top notch product and giving back to the community which has given it so much — magic begins to happen.  A virtuous circle is put into motion where symbiotic and reciprocal relationships bloom between the business, its customers and the community at large, creating a daisy chain of mutually beneficial circumstances.  Socially responsible capitalism is exercised…creating profit, helping the less fortunate, growing the business and generating good karma — all simultaneously.  That’s when the rewards of true success begin to reveal themselves.

To see a local example of this business model in action, one need look no further than Mr. Shower Door, a family-owned business headquartered right in sunny Naples.  After running a similar business for 15 years up in snowy New England, Bill and Donna Daubmann decided to sell it all and head south for a warm and relaxing retirement in Lee County, Florida.  All that changed when their two sons, Keith and Doug, came down to visit and made the decision to relocate their lives and ambitions among our sandy shorelines and swaying palms.  That’s when the decision was made to open Mr. Shower Door of Southwest Florida.

Now, Mr. Shower Door has been recognized by the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce as the 2009 Small Business of the Year.

Cape Coral Barometer made it a point to catch up with Bill Daubmann to ask him about the secrets behind Mr. Shower Door’s success.  He was more than happy to share the accomplishment-laden journey his family has traveled with their business since it opened in Florida in 2003.

Here’s what he had to say:

Keith is the President of Mr. Shower Door of Southwest Florida.  His brother, Douglas, is Vice President.  They are the officers of the company and Donna and I participate where we can.  Keith and Doug, along with the rest of our team, have grown this business to far more than Donna and I ever did in our 15 years in New England.  Now we’ve got our main office in Naples plus satellite showrooms in Fort Myers and Sarasota.  In just six years we’ve expanded to 19 employees and we presently service all the areas between Marco Island and Bradenton.  Some of our current projects include work in the Sea Castle timeshares on Siesta Key and renovations at the Naples Beach Hotel.

We’ve really taken the leadership position when it comes to the shower door industry in Southwest Florida.  The quality of our work and craftsmanship has garnered us many awards.  Mr. Shower Door won the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award in Collier County in 2004 and the “Best of S.W. Florida” award five years in a row.  Additionally, we’ve captured the “Choice” award for the past four years and we were a finalist for the “Small Business of the Year” in Bonita Springs in 2006.  In 2007, Mr. Shower Door won the highest glass award in the country, which was presented by “Glass Magazine” for the Best Shower Enclosure in the United States.

Most recently, Mr. Shower Door was named the 2009 Small Business of the Year by the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce.  This was a big one for us.  It shows that our business has a verifiable history of success, growth, and community involvement.  It means even more that we were able to capture this award during a time of economic upheaval  This award is proof that a small business can be successful in any economy, it’s all about listening to the market.  You have to be creative and give the customers what they’re asking for.  You have to continually train your staff.  Our business is only as good as the people we hire to represent it, so we make sure that they are well versed in the finer details of our products and are able to communicate that product knowledge to our clients.

All of these honors allow our customers to trust in the level of service and experience they can expect from us.  But, more importantly, our success in the shower door industry has created lots of rewarding opportunities for us to give back to the community.”

Bill and Donna Daubmann have donated time to the Collier County school system, where they’ve staged presentations for the benefit of high school students striving to be entrepreneurs.  Mr. Shower Door has also established a fund whereby a portion of every purchase is donated to the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  This money is then used to grant wishes which will enrich the lives of children with life threatening medical conditions.

Of course, the rewards and recognition are satisfying, but our partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation is something altogether different.  This gives a whole extra layer of meaning to the work we do.  There’s something special about helping a child achieve a dream and we are proud as a company for doing it.  That’s a success all its own.
